So last night, I guess around 5:30am, actually, I was in that vague in-between sleep and awake state that, unfortunately, I am in far too often when I want to be sleeping. (Yay fibro.) Suddenly, I heard three knocks on the wall by my bed. My room is at the corner of the house, so I have two outside walls, both of which are by my bed. It was one of these walls that I heard the knocking from. That woke me up, of course, and Spartacus, who was lying on my stomach, sat straight up. As I listened, the knocking continued, moving around the corner to the other wall, where it got lower, because the house is on a hill and my other wall is higher above the ground. Panicking a lot, I I grabbed for my cell phone, as Spartacus leapt off the bed and went to cower in the middle of the room. I thought that was weird because usually he'd go for the window to see what was up. I heard a bunch of scraping at the apple tree outside my window and froze, trying to think of what the heck to do. Then I heard the knocking against my window.
Gaining some sense, Spartacus and I nope-nope-noped out of the room, although he froze up again about a foot from the door and I had to drag him out. I shut the door, shaking a lot, and went across the hall to my brother's room. He hadn't heard anything, and didn't really know what to do any more than I did. So I went to go get Mom. I was really thrown off, trembling a lot, as I told her about it. She thought the only animal that maybe would do that is a bear, so more likely it was a person (I was secretly of the opinion it was a devil-demon-ghost-serial killer), or I had imagined it. My father was getting up just then, so Mom had him go in my room and look. He didn't see anything, so he went outside to check around the house and also see if there were footprints in the snow. When he came back, he told us there were deer tracks -- a deer had come around the house to eat the apples and I guess he had antlers or something because he kept knocking against the wall. Possibly the knock on the window was from him shaking the tree too much. I guess Spart was freaked out partly because we'd never heard that before and partly because I was so freaked out. He's incredibly responsive to my emotional state.
So yes, that is the story of how a deer gave me a panic attack. I had to play Candy Crush for like an hour after that in order to relax again, LOL. YAY DEER.
