So, my laptop broke, which is why I'm posting this Wordy Wednesday on a Thursday. I should get a new one in a week or so, but I won't be posting Saturday this week as a result. Sorry!
It's time for Wordy Wednesday! I chose to post a novel excerpt and you guys voted on which one: it was a 50/50 split in the results, so I'm picking THE ICE ENCHANTRESS'S PLOT, the second novel I ever wrote (back in sixth grade), which is an MG fantasy. Here's the first chapter, nice and ready for you to read. Please remember that this is not a final draft!
Twelve Years Ago
A single snowflake fell from the sun-kissed sky, foreboding the future that was coming more quickly than anyone could stop it. Hailie Regna stood between the dunes of sands, a golden shawl wrapped around the top of her pink tulle dress, and kept her gaze focused on her feet. Before her lay the Door, silver, black rimmed, and terrible against the sharp cliff face. These were the Outlands, where no Drachaan dared go. But now, Hailie and her family had no choice. Despite her determination to keep her thoughts clear, Hailie’s eyes filled with tears that spilled over onto her pale cheeks.
This Door was a last resort, the exit for the banished and those too desperate to stay. A mental veil, it drew forgetfulness over the minds of those who crossed it. After her sister left for the non-magical world, she would not return. There was no going back now.
A shout rang out across the desert and Hailie looked up to see her sister surrounded on all sides by guards. The woman held a baby in her arms, clasped tightly to her chest. The child was Hailie’s one-year-old niece, and at one point, she had been Dracha’s greatest hope. Now, her life was threatened so drastically the Regnas had no choice. She and her mother had to pass through the Door in order to protect the girl, and Dracha itself, from a terrible fate.
A choking gasp burst from Hailie’s chest as she looked into her sister’s helpless eyes. She tried to move forward, but the lead guard put out a hand and pushed her back. Her legs fell out under her, and then she was kneeling on the ground, watching the guards push her sister towards the Door.
“No!” she screamed, losing control of herself completely in that moment. “Darya!” Her hands scraped through the sand as she struggled to pull herself forward, her body shaking from the force of her sobs. Darya turned to look at her, opening her mouth as though to speak, and then the lead guard opened the Door. Hailie watched, sobbing, as Darya passed through and the Door shut behind her. It was over.
“No.” Hailie leaned forward and covered her face with her hands. This had been necessary, but the logic of that brought no relief to her in her sorrow. Her family was safe, but at what cost?
The lead guard pulled her to her feet with an unyielding but gentle hand and the other guards surrounded her. Together, they headed back to the city. As they walked, Hailie’s chest boiled with her anger towards the Ice Enchantress, the one who had destroyed everything, from the peace of Dracha to the lives of those she treasured most.
“My Queen,” the lead guard said a few moments later as they moved into the city. He inclined his head. “The coronation will be held tonight. I trust you are prepared to take your position.”
Hailie‘s eyes flickered to him and then away again. “I am ready.”
“Yes, my Queen.”
They walked up the palace steps, Hailie holding her skirt up with one hand, and entered the beginning of a new reign in which all that mattered was Dracha‘s desperate struggle to survive.
A single snowflake fell from the sky. The journey had begun.
Hope you liked it! <3 Next Wednesday, I'll be doing a photoroll post, though some of the pictures I would've liked to post will have vanished with my dead laptop.
